Bionic Uptime and WPMU DEV Uptime: what is actually different
The WPMU DEV Hub looks after WordPress sites: updates, backups, reports, and an Uptime module that is free with a free Hub account. If you already run your sites through it, it is a sensible choice. This page says plainly where we differ, and where WPMU DEV is the better choice.
| Feature | WPMU DEV Uptime | Bionic Uptime |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free with a free Hub account, with the limits below. A paid membership lifts them, and so does hosting a site with WPMU DEV, for that site | 3 websites, checked every 60 seconds, forever, no card. Portfolio: $12 a month, 20 websites |
| How often | Every 2 minutes. Its documentation names a server in Virginia, USA | Every 60 seconds, from Chicago and New Jersey on two different companies' networks |
| Before an outage alert | You choose: at once, or after 5, 10 or 30 minutes. On the free Hub, 5 minutes at the least | Two locations plus a retry must agree within 45 seconds. Then the email goes at once, or after 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes if you prefer, on every plan, free included |
| Who is told | Email, each recipient confirming their address. On the free Hub, one address; more recipients need a paid membership | You, plus up to 3 more people per website, such as the client or a colleague, each confirming by email, on every plan. Optionally one Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams or Google Chat channel for the whole account |
| Which sites | Sites connected to the Hub, which is built for WordPress | Any website, WordPress or not, checked from outside. Nothing to install on the site |

Choose WPMU DEV if
- you already use the Hub for updates, backups and reports, and want uptime in the same place,
- your sites are hosted with WPMU DEV, where the free Hub limits do not apply,
- you look after more than 20 sites: our largest plan is 20.
Choose Bionic Uptime if
- you want the email at once and the client told too, without paying: both are on our free plan,
- you want each site checked every minute, from two places on two different networks,
- some of the sites are not WordPress,
- you want one plain email per real outage, saying what both locations saw (see the exact email), which you can forward to the client as it is.
You can run both. Our checks come from outside the site, so they do not conflict with the Hub, and our free WordPress plugin is optional.
